Lamar-Putnam homecoming preview

By Ken K. Green Lamar County celebrates Homecoming 2013 this week as the Trojans (6-0, 3-0) welcome the Putnam County War Eagles (2-4, 1-2) to Thunder Alley for another Region 4-AA battle. When and Where: Friday 7:30 p.m. at Trojan Field. Tickets: All tickets $7 at the gate. Advanced discounted tickets for Lamar County School System students, faculty and staff (one per person) only for $5 available at all four schools through one o’clock Friday. Weather: Cloudy with little to no chance of rain with temperatures in the mid to low 60s throughout the game. There is a 100% chance of Thunder. Last week: The Trojans beat Monticello 47-7 at home. The War Eagles were off but are coming off four straight losses (Macon County 23-20, Bleckley County 35-30, Jones County 35-0 and Morgan County 26-7) after opening the season with wins over Greene County 28-6 and Crawford County 48-20. Last year: Last year Lawrence Austin scored three rushing touchdowns on only five carries as Ray Lyons and the Trojan defense recorded its third straight shutout in a 51-0 rout in Eatonton. The War Eagles went on to a 3-7 season and sixth place finish in the region. Series: The Trojans lead 4-1. The Putnam’s only win in the series was 20-7 in 2010 in Eatonton. The two schools first met in 1984. Trojan offense vs. War Eagle defense: Lamar is scoring 41.7 points per game while the War Eagles are yielding 24.2 War Eagle offense vs. Trojan defense: Putnam County is averaging 19.5 points per game while the Trojans yield 12.5. Top War Eagle players: Micheas Brown, Trevon Ellison, Quintavious Waller and Tyrone Davis. Putnam County coach: Kyle Gouley 1st year. Rankings: Lamar County is 3rd in Class AA in a composite ranking of six polls including a number one ranking by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Putnam County is the 39th best team in AA according to Max Preps. Prediction: Lamar County 49 Putnam County 6. The Trojans are 36 point favorites per Maxwell Ratings.
