Lamar – Spalding football preview

By Ken K. Green Lamar County opens the 2013 season hosting the Spalding High Jaguars in the annual Border War this week. When and Where: Friday 7:30 p.m. at Trojan Field. Tickets: All tickets $7 at the gate. Advanced discounted tickets for Lamar County School System students, faculty and staff (one per person) only for $5 available at all four schools through one o’clock Friday. Weather: Cloudy with a 30% chance of rain and temperatures in the mid to low 80s throughout the game. There will be Thunder. Pre-season scrimmage results: Lamar County beat Stone Mountain 35-6 in a pre-season scrimmage. Spalding beat Pike County 16-6. Last year: Tyler Scandrett’s 22 yard field goal with no time on the clock saved Lamar from defeat as the two teams tied 3-3 in Griffin. Spalding went on to a 2-7-1 season while the Trojans finished 12-1-1. Series: Tied 2-2-1. Lamar County won 21-12 at old Summers Field Memorial Stadium in 2002 and christened Trojan Field with a 31-0 drubbing of the Jags in 2009. Spalding won 47-15 in 2003 and 42-15 in 2008, both games in Griffin. Jaguar defense vs. Trojan offense: Gave up 21 points per game last season. The Trojans averaged 35 ppg. scoring. Jaguar offense vs. Trojan defense: Spalding scrapped its spread offense after scoring just 10 points per game last season and now employs the Wing-T. Lamar’s defense yielded 11.2. Top Spalding players: #14 Sr. RB/DB Brandon Thomas, #51 Sr. OL/LB Jake Jeffcoat and #60 OL/DL Jay Westbury. Spalding coach: Nick Davis, 2nd season 4-15-1. Rankings: Lamar County is 4th in Class AA in a composite ranking of six polls including a number two ranking by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Spalding is the 57th best team in AAAA according to Max Preps. Prediction: Lamar County 38 Spalding 7. MaxPreps has Lamar as a 23-point favorite. Notes: Friday is ‘White-Out Night’ and fans are encouraged to wear white. White ‘We Are Lamar’ shirts are available for sale from Lamar County Athletic Director Calvin Scandrett at the high school. The gates to Trojan Alley will open at 6 p.m. Friday.
