Lamar wrestlers peaking as area, sectional meets loom

The LC varsity wrestlers won their 12th and 13th dual matches last week as area meets approach. On Tuesday, Lamar topped Americus-Sumter and Alcovy before falling to Upson-Lee. ‘Our guys have wrestled really tough over the past couple of weeks and look forward to continuing that push into the postseason,’ coach Jeff Sloan said. The Class AA area meet is this weekend. Those in the top four there will move on to the sectionals and have an opportunity to earn a spot in the state tournament to be held Feb. 11-13 at Gwinnett Arena. The LCMS grapplers are also doing well. In a meet last week at Mt. De Sales, every Trojan competing finished in the top three. Cayden Sloan was tournament champion while Hunter Banks, Timothy Garrett, Chaz Hammock and Levi Banks all earned second place finishes. Terence Pennyman, Dakota Good, C.J. Harris, Jadyn Tallman and Brandon Bloodworth all came in third in their weight classes. The middle school championships are Friday at Upson-Lee. Sloan took 13 youth wrestlers to Atlanta Sunday to compete in a USA tourney at the Lovett School. Good, Garrett, Tallman, Chaz Hammock and Reid Flournoy were tournament champions. Sloan and Matthew Stone earned second place finishes. Earning third place medal were locals Samuel Blevins, Jacob Gibson, Jett Abrams, Solomon Arnold and Hunter Hammock.
