LC basketball season opens tonight

by Ken K. Green When Lamar County opens its home basketball season tonight, fans will see two new but familiar faces pacing the sidelines. Cecil Spear returns to coach the Trojans after spending the past several years at Spalding while Nina Shannon is in her first year as head coach of the Lady Trojans after working as an assistant at Southwest Macon. Lamar will host Region 4-AA foe Northeast Macon tonight with the Lady Trojans tipping off at six o’clock followed by the boys game at 7:30 p.m. The Trojans and Raiders meet for the first time since Lamar beat them for the Region 4-AA tournment championship last season on the way to a school best 27-4 season and a trip to the state’s Elite 8. The Lady Raiders won the girls side of the tournament. Lamar opened the season last week in Griffin with the Trojans taking a 54-53 win over the Bears in overtime while the Lady Trojans suffered a 60-37 loss to the Lady Bears.
