The Lady Trojan 4x100 relay team took gold at the GHSA state track championships last week in Rome with a time of 49.22. The team consisted of (l-r) Aniya Barron, Makayla Watts, Armani Flewellen and Samiya Smith. Watts, a freshman, also won the 200-meter dash with a 24.27, a new state record, and the 100-meters with a time of 12.17.

LC freshman sets state record in 200-meter dash, brings home three gold medals

The LC track team traveled to Rome for the GHSA Class A, Div. 1 state championships and brought home some gold. The team was led by freshman Makayla Watts, whom many observers feel may be the best athlete to ever come out of Lamar County by the time her career is over.

The Lady Trojans finished sixth out of 30 teams, just 2.5 points shy of a state title. The Trojans were seventh out of 34 teams and 11 points behind the front runner.

Watts, who has trained since she was very young, won the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.17. She then won the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.27, which is a new state record for Class A.

Watts then joined Aniya Barron, Samiya Smith and Armani Flewellen on the 4×100 relay which won gold with a time of 49.22. Barron, Smith and Flewellen, all seniors, only train on track sporadically as they concentrate on soccer.

Watts also was third in the long jump at 18-0.5. She finished as the high point award at the meet, totaling 28.5 points.

Other Trojans also shined.

Caleb Laster was second in the 100-meters with a time of 10.88 and fifth in the 200-meters at 22.34.

DeJon Obermuller was second in the 300-meter hurdles at 38.87 and third in the 110-meter hurdles with a 38.87.

Ross Hamrick was fifth in the high jump at 6-0. Journi Harris was fifth in shot put, throwing 35-8. She was 15th in discus at 87-8.

Elijah Mitchell finished sixth in the 110-meter hurdles with a 15.8. The boys 4×200 relay team was ninth at 1:32.39. That team consisted of Laster, Obermuller, Ty Head and Kaiden Keillor.

Madisyn Hardaway was 12th in discuss, throwing 92-11.

The girls 4×200 relay team was 13th with a time of 1:50.38. That team was made up of Barron, Smith, Flewellen and Ava Bushby.


Jordan Anderson finished 16th in the two-mile run.
