The Lamar Co. Trojans Summer Baseball Team is in the process of winding down what has been an extremely busy summer. The month of June has seen the Trojans play in three invitational tournaments, including their own Bringin’ The Heat Summer Tournament that just concluded on Saturday at Aldora Field. Next on the agenda is a team camp at Berry College in Rome, Ga. where the Trojan Players will receive individual instruction from the Berry College Coaches in the mornings, and then play games in the afternoons against other teams participating in the camp. The Trojan players and their coaches will be housed in the Berry College dormitories, fed in the college’s cafeteria, and have access to the college’s recreational facilities during their ‘off-times’. This will be the 2nd consecutive year that the team has attended Berry College’s Baseball Camp that is directed by Berry College’s Head Baseball Coach, David Beasley, and his assistant coaches. Going into this week’s camp at Berry, the Trojans have a summer record of 14-3-1. The Trojans have participated in invitational tournaments at Mary Persons, Crisp Co.,and Barnesville. In the just recently concluded ‘Bringin’ The Heat Summer Tournament at Aldora Field, the Trojans went undefeated in their pool play with wins over Jackson, Monticello, Marion Co., and Paideia to advance to the championship game against Schley Co. Schley Co. won their pool play at Mary Persons in the other half of the tournament bracket. The 14-team tournament consisted of teams from Lamar Co., Marion Co., Paideia, Jackson, Stockbridge, Monticello, Spalding Co., Mary Persons, Upson-Lee, Schley Co., Henry Co. Woodland, Macon Co., Crisp Co., & Howard. Crisp Co. and Spalding Co. dropped out of the tournament, after some early games, for varying reasons. And then forfeited the remainder of their scheduled games. In the championship game on Saturday against Schley Co., the Trojans being the home team, led 6-3 with 2-outs in the top-half of the 7th inning, and only needed one-out to win the tournament championship. An infield error on a ground ball extended the inning and allowed the Wildcats of Schley Co. to tie the game at ‘6-all’ to send the game into extra innings. At the end of the day, the Trojans finished as runner-ups in the tournament, as Schley Co. ended-up defeating the Trojans by a 9-6 score. Some side notes on the tournament was the great job that the Trojans Dugout Club did in putting on the tournament. The concessions were outstanding which included daily specials like scrambled-burgers, taco salads, chicken fingers & fries, homemade peach ice cream, & sweet iced-tea. And, to quench the thirsts of the players, coaches, umpires and fans, there was plenty of Power-Aids available, too.Not by accident, however, but the tournament’s moniker — Bringin’ The Heat — could never have been more accurate, as the temperatures were sweltering, and soared well into the mid-to-upper 90’s. After the Trojans return from a full week of instruction and games at the Berry College Camp, they will have finished the summer baseball program. Then will come a well-deserved rest for all of the players and coaches before school starts back in late July.
