By Sherri EllingtonJake Brennon McFarlan is the first baby of the new year in Lamar County.Jake was born to Kathryn and Matt McFarlan, both 35, of Milner at 7:58 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 3, 2013 at Upson Regional Medical Center.’We were talking about the possibility of being the first baby on the way to the hospital,’ said Kathryn.Jake was Upson Regional Medical Center’s first baby of the year as well.Kathryn, in effect, had been in labor since Dec. 6, the day of their emergency trip to a Macon medical center that left her on bed rest. Her daughter had been born prematurely and the McFarlans were taking no chances.’We stayed in Macon Medical eight days and bought ourselves four more weeks,’ she said. ‘It was no fun for me ‘“ we’re not sitaround people ‘“ but Jake got to cook a little while longer.’The day Jake was born Kathryn went for a checkup at the doctor’s office and, in labor, was sent immediately to the hospital. On the way, they narrowed down four choices for his middle name to Brennon, then decided how to spell it.’He’s our little miracle baby,’ she said. ‘He even got to come home with us’ instead of being kept in the hospital.Kathryn works in women’s services at the Upson Regional medical building in Barnesville. Matt is a K-9 officer for the Griffin police department and is a veteran having served at Guantanamo Bay in the U.S. Marine Corps.
