Local camps abound this summer

With another school year coming to an end and summer approaching, many young people and their parents are looking for activities that provide quality experiences. Summer camps fill that need and there are many scheduled here in the coming weeks. Here are some that may be a fit for you and your children. CHAMPS Camp, sponsored by the Lamar County Sheriff’s Office, will consist of two sessions set for June 17-21 and July 15-19. The free camps are open to any fifth or sixth grader attending school in Lamar County. Lunch and snacks are provided. Space is limited. Contact Sgt. Adam Rowell at 770-358-5159. Lamar Arts will host art and drama camps. Art camps will be held June 10-14 and June 17-21. Andrew P. Henry will teach the first session with Eleanor and Alan Stecker teaching the second. Drama camps are set for June 24-28 and July 1-2. Both will be taught by Cory Robinson. Times are 9 a.m. – noon and the cost is $60. For more information, call 770-358-5888 and leave a message. Camp Create is set for June 3-6 from 9 a.m. – noon at First Methodist Church. The camp is free and the children will sing and act in a production based on The Lorax at the 10 a.m. worship service June 9. Afterwards, The Varsity food truck will cater lunch. Cost is $5. St. George’s Episcopal School is offering seven weekly camp options over the summer combining education and fun including space, inventions, plants and animals, underwater olympics, senses and storybook adventures. Multiple sports camps are also on the summer menu. Former LC soccer players are hosting three sessions of soccer camp at the recreation soccer complex for kids ages 8-15. The dates are June 11-13, June 18-20 and June 25-27. Cost is $15 or $20 if you want a bag and a shirt. The fee covers a snack and equipment. Bring your own ball if you have one. Call 770-358-5800 for details. Gordon State College coach Scott Henderson is also offering up his highly-regarded camp for kids ages four and up. Camps are four days and the fee is $189. Sessions are June 10-13 and June 17-20. A soccer ball, t-shirt, lunch daily and swim time are included. To learn more, call 678-359-5123. The LC football coaching staff will conduct its youth football camp May 28-30 at Trojan Field. Players will assist coaches in teaching fundamentals in all areas of the game. The cost is $45. St. George’s Episcopal School will hold its annual youth basketball camp June 3-6 from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. The camp will be led by athletic director and head basketball coach Britt Gaylor.
