By Rachel McDanielLocal restaurants and food service providers – including caterers and school cafeterias – are inspected at random each year by the Lamar County Health Department. Based on hundreds of requirements for storing and preparing food items as well as keeping equipment and food contact surfaces clean, each food service provider can receive a score of up to 100. Restaurants who receive a score of 79 or below are notified of the issues that need correction and re-inspected within 8 to 10 days.’Most local establishments know what the requirements are and usually meet all the requirements,’ said Environmental Health Specialist Seth Woodrow. ‘If needed, we work with them to get their scores up as soon as possible by showing them things they could do better and showing them what needs to be done differently. We make sure everything is within the required temperatures and employees are washing their hands when they should and handling food properly.’ The detailed list of requirements – including required temperatures for different cold and hot foods – can be found at dph.georgia.gov. Restaurants are docked points for keeping foods at incorrect temperatures, not having surfaces sufficiently cleaned, if cooking and storing procedures aren’t followed exactly or if equipment is not maintained and cleaned properly.Woodrow said common issues for local restaurants include structural problems. Inspectors arrive unannounced at restaurants, usually every 4 to 6 months for an inspection.’The only time we schedule an inspection is when a new facility opens or there is a change of ownership,’ said Woodrow. ‘We try to get them into compliance with the current codes right away.’The following list of restaurant grades include the date they were inspected in 2015 and their previous grade: McDonalds in Barnesville earned a score of 91 Jan. 26 and a 91 June 16, 2014.Rock Springs Christian Academy Elementary School in Barnesville earned a 100 April 21 and a 100 Oct. 20, 2014.
