A recent accident at Veterans Parkway and Grove street resulted in the death of Betty June Smith, 80, of 154 Barnesville Ave., Barnesville. City police Lt. Al Moltrum reported that Smith and Kenneth Stidham were passengers in a vehicle driven by Barbra Stidham, southbound on Veterans Parkway, when another vehicle failed to yield at Grove street and struck the Stidham car on June 29. Smith was taken to Spalding Regional Hospital and later transferred to Atlanta Medical Center, where she died July 3 as a result of trauma suffered in the accident. Both Stidhams also were injured, but the extent of injuries is not known. Richard Fagan of 136 Park Place, Barnesville, driver of the other vehicle, was charged with the accident, as well as failure to yield while entering an intersection, driving while under the influence of alcohol, DUI less safe, driving while license suspended and violation of license permit. On July 8, warrants were obtained for Fagan for vehicular homicide. Moltrum said Fagan had bonded out of jail on the original charges made June 29 and has not been found.
