Local man gets 22 years for child molestation

A 37-year-old Lamar County man was sentenced to 22 years in prison and 20 years probation for having an inappropriate sexual relationship with an 11-year-old female family member. The criminal activity was graphically discussed in court by assistant district attorney Mark Daniel who presented the case to Judge Bill Fears in Lamar superior court June 25. Eric Duran Greer entered guilty pleas to one count of incest and one count of first degree cruelty to children as part of a plea agreement. Two counts of aggravated child molestation, two counts of sexual exploitation of children and one count of aggravated sexual battery against Greer were dismissed as part of the deal. Daniel said prosecutors agreed to the deal to resolve the case. ‘We can prove the other counts. Mr. Greer has admitted his guilt. We found (lewd) photos of (the victim) on his phone,’ Daniel said. The case came to light when the victim told a friend of her ordeal at a sleepover. The friend told her mother who contacted authorities. ’The victim was forensically interviewed. I have been doing this for 26 years and I can say that this was the most intense interview session I have seen,’ Daniel added. The child is undergoing extensive counseling and was not in court. She did pen a letter to Greer that Daniel read in open court. ‘I know what you did and you know what you did,’ the victim wrote. The victim’s mother tearfully read her own victim impact statement in a halting voice. ‘Time does not heal all wounds,’ she said. Public defender Allen R. Knox also read a brief apology from Greer in the courtroom. In addition to his prison sentence and probation, Greer was ordered to register as a sex offender He is also banned from any county in which the child lives in the future.
