Lt. Chad Payne of the Lamar sheriff’s office was seriously injured in an accident involving a tractor and bush hog May 4 at his home in Upson County.According to sheriff Brad White, Payne was using a tractor he had just purchased to cut grass with the bush hog. He got off the tractor thinking he had put it in park. When he got off, the tractor rolled forward and ran over him. The tractor PTO was engaged and the blade just missed him. ‘The grass was cut right next to where he was down. He had been considering a six foot bush hog but bought a five-foot one. That decision saved his life,’ the sheriff said. Payne escaped the blades but not the crush of the tractor, breaking eight ribs. He was lifeflighted to the Macon Medical Center and was recovering nicely at presstime.
