Man confesses to beating child to death

A 20-year old Gray man has reportedly confessed to beating his girlfriend’s three-year-old son to death in Monroe County. The confessed killer, Lawrence Jackson, spent some time the week before Christmas 2009 in the Lamar County jail on a drug charge. Text from the Monroe County Reporter: The man, Lawrence Jackson, admitted to investigators with the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office on Wednesday that his abuse led to the death of 3-year-old Connor Lenning. Sources close to the investigation say Jackson confessed before he was scheduled to take a lie detector test. He is being held in the Monroe County Jail and expected to be charged with murder. The GBI crime lab had reported that blunt force trauma to the abdomen was the cause of death, and the body contained numerous bruises in that area. Jackson often kept the child at home while the mother, 22-year-old Jessica Merritt, worked. The boy was taken to the Monroe County Hospital emergency room just after 7 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 26 and died shortly thereafter, according to the boy’s grandmother, Barbara Lenning. Family members reported he was throwing up. Inv. Allen Henderson of the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office is the lead investigator. Jackson listed a Gray address when he was arrested in Barnesville in December for possession of marijuana. To reach the Monroe Co. Reporter website, click http://mymcr.net
