Man miraculously revived after 341/18 crash

Two people were critically injured in a late morning crash today at the deadly intersection of highways 341 and 18 in Barnesville. The accident occurred when a 1997 Buick LeSabre, driven by Mildred Smith of a Graham St. address in Barnesville, ran the stoplight at the intersection. Smith was westbound on Rose Ave./Hwy 18. She pulled into the path of a northbound 1990 Toyota pickup truck driven by Paul Hayes of 431 Crawford Rd. Hayes was critically hurt and was dead at the scene, according to fire chief Steve Andrews. An heroic effort by emergency personnel miraculously saved his life as he was revived in an ambulance on the way to Spalding Regional Medical Center. EMTs, firefighters and others did chest compressions on Hayes in the roadway for over 20 minutes and administered medication directly to his heart. He remains in critical condition, however. Smith was also badly hurt and lifeflighted to the trauma center at Grady Hospital in Atlanta. She is also in critical condition. ”At this time, we have heartbeats on both of them,” deputy Lamar coroner Cindy Killingswoirth reported at 3:30 p.m. Also injured was Hayes’ stepson, Bobby Lee, who was a passenger in the pickup truck. He was also taken to Spalding Regional but is expected to recover from his injuries.
