March Madness coming to Gordon

For reprint permission, e-mail news@barnesville.com. *************** Gordon is second in the GCAA boasting a 22-7 record overall and will close out the regular season hosting South Georgia Tech this Thursday at 7:30 at Alumni Memorial Hall. The league tournament starts next Tuesday and the Highlanders will host the conference’s sixth seed at 7:30. The tournament wraps up with the semi-finals next Friday followed by the championship game on Saturday. The winner advances to the national tournament in Hutchinson, Kansas. Some of Gordon’s most recent wins include an 89-69 win over East Georgia led by Jarvis Williams’ 32 points and 14 rebounds and Marquis Barnes’ 26 points and eight rebounds. Williams had 18 points and 11 boards in an 80-67 win over Atlanta Metro. Michael Tankersley and Ryan Fleming added 11 and 10 points respectively. George Brown tipped in a rebound at the buzzer to give Gordon a 59-57 win over Albany Tech. Williams scored 16 points in the game followed by Williams who had 15 points and 12 rebounds. Tyler Brookins scored 23 points including four three-pointers to lead the Highlanders to a 96-89 win over Chattahoochee Tech in overtime. Williams had 18 points and 11 rebounds while Brown scored 16 and Tankersley added 14 points and nine boards. During the win streak, Williams was named the Player of the Week by the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association (GCAA). The 6′ 8″ freshman from Macon and Wilkinson County High School led the Highlanders to wins over defending conference champions Waycross College and Central Georgia Tech. He had 17 points and 9 assists in a 66 – 46 win over Waycross College and 18 points, 10 rebounds, and 3 steals in an 89 – 81 victory over Central Georgia Tech. For the week, Williams averaged 17.5 points and 9.5 rebounds per game while shooting 14 – 22 from the field (63.6%), 1 – 1 from three point (100%), and 6 – 8 from the free throw line (75%).
