Marcus White working with youth through basketball; he needs help

For the past several years, Marcus White has been working to provide off-the-street opportunities for young people in the community through basketball. He is the founder of the Booker Tigers Elite travel teams.

The idea is to get boys and girls off the streets and into the gym to compete in a quality basketball program that will also serve as a feeder program for the varsity teams at the high school. The varsity girls teams have performed at an exceptionally high level over the past few years but the varsity boys have struggled to make it to double digit wins.

White knows the talent is out there but it is not being developed and too many young athletes get derailed by various hurdles life places before them.

The hurdle White and his organization face this year is finding a gym to call their own.

“Last year we were able to rent one of the five gyms in the community but our rental cost is going up 150% for this year. Our daily rate is going from $200 per day for 1.5 hours to $500 per day for 1.5 hours and we need help,” White said.

The facility bill for this year will be a daunting hurdle indeed for a fledgling operation.
