Mary Laverne Aiken

Mrs. Mary Laverne Aiken, age 74, of Barnesville passed away Thursday, June 5, 2014 at her residence. She was born Sept. 24,1939, to Gladys and William Player Cooper in Ocilla, Ga. Mrs. Aiken was a proud Marine wife, homemaker, and volunteered with many military organizations prior to moving to Barnesville in 1978. Mrs. Aiken was also a successful Realtor with Searcy and Co., Century 21 and Dora Cox Realty. She was a past president of the Barnesville Chamber of Commerce and was a past Business Woman of the Year. Mrs. Aiken has been retired for several years. She was a member of the Barnesville Garden Club, National Association of Realtors, Georgia Association of Realtors, and Heart of Georgia Board of Realtors. Laverne is lovingly remembered and survived by her husband, Lt. Col. Thomas H. Aiken, USMC Ret.; two children, son and daughter-in-law Mike and Pamela Aiken and daughter Beth Aiken; grandsons, Thomas (and Carrie) and Daniel; granddaughter, Sara Johnson; two sisters, Vivian Ferland (and Tony) of Lake Oconee and Lucy Lanthrop (and Ross) of Aiken, S.C.; one brother, Lucious Cooper of Richmond, Va.; one brother-in-law, Wallace Aiken (and Nina); and several nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by one brother, Brian Cooper. The family would like to thank Brightmoor Hospice and Coastal Home Care for easing Mrs. Aiken’s journey through the final months. Box 758517, Topeka, Kan., 66675. A memorial service celebrating the life of Mary Laverne Aiken will be conducted on Saturday, June 7, 2014 at 2:30 p.m. in the chapel of Williams Funeral Home.
