Mayo record focuses spotlight on county personnel policy

Allegations surfacing about the Lamar County assessors board hiring chief appraiser Linda Mayo before her criminal background check was done have revealed county personnel policy does not authorize background and drug tests on potential employees. The new hire has to be hired first. However, Mayo, 46, had been up front about her past, noting a DUI she got when she was 23 on her application and telling assessors about it upon being interviewed. ”The assessors on the board at that time and county commission knew about it,” Mayo said. “I don’t know that the newer members are aware.” The background check revealed Mayo, in her youth, also had two deposit account fraud cases, both of which had been repaid and only one of which she was required to pay a fine. For the DUI, she pled nolo contendre and paid her fine.
