Barnesville mayor Peter Banks met with Macon mayor Robert Reichert and others last week to discuss the prospects for the long discussed, never implemented rapid rail service linking Atlanta and Macon. The service would likely run through Barnesville. Also in attendance at the meeting were the mayors of Forsyth and Griffin. Commuter rail is one of the talking points of the Obama administration but is exorbitantly expensive to put in place, making it unlikely any progress will be made in the current economy.”I think it will eventually happen. I may not live to see it but it will become a reality one day,” Banks said of the service.
