‘Meet the Trojans’ Saturday

The Lamar County High School baseball team will host its annual “Meet The Trojan Night” this Saturday at 6 p.m. The event, which will take place at The Gathering Place will cap off a full day of events as the Diamond Trojan middle school, junior varsity and varsity players, who will be determined after a tryout period this week, will have a team breakfast and picture day Saturday morning. “Meet The Trojan Night”, hosted by the Lamar County Dugout Club, will feature a taco dinner, silent auction and door prizes as well as recognition of all of the baseball players for the upcoming season. The event’s guest speaker will be Darton College coach Scott Hemmings. Hemmings, a former teammate of Diamond Trojan coach Greg Williams at Abraham Baldwin, is in his first year at the helm of the Albany college’s team. He spent the past four season as head coach of Central High School in his home town of Columbus. He has also coached at Andrew College and Chattahoochee Valley Community College. He played prep ball at Columbus High where he was a member of three state championship teams. He signed to play at Middle Georgia College before transferring to ABAC. He was drafted out of high school by the New York Yankees and out of ABAC by the San Diego Padres turning down a scholarship from Columbus State. In the Padres organization, he reached the AAA level but injuries forced him to retire. Admission to “Meet The Trojans Night” is $7 and $2 for children under the age of ten.
