Millions earmarked for local library projects

$5.78 million in funding for improvements to local libraries as requested by the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia has been approved by the state legislature. Barring a line item veto by Gov. Nathan Deal, these projects are a done deal, The Herald Gazette has learned. The BOR budget as approved by the legislature includes $4.4 million for renovation of the Hightower Library on the Gordon State College campus. Also funded is $1.38 million for expansion/improvements at the Barnesville-Lamar County Library in Barnesville. The BOR got the full amount it requested for the Gordon project. A conference committee trimmed only $5000 off the amount requested for the B-LC library project. The budget needs only the signature of the governor to become final.
