Milner forensic audit costly; mayor meeting with GBI Thursday

In his first regular meeting as mayor of Milner July 20, Andy Marlowe instructed police chief Michael Bailey to ask the GBI to do a ‘complete forensic audit’ of the city’s finances. The GBI and LCSO are currently finishing up a probe into the council as directed by district attorney Jonathan Adams. GBI assistant special agent in charge Josh Ayer reported last week the GBI has a unit that does forensic audits but the waiting list is long. Delays up to two years are possible. Governments are encouraged to do their own forensic audits which are costly – $20,000-$25,000, according to one estimate – and present them to investigators. ’We are currently concentrating on finishing up the current investigation in Milner and getting it to the DA,’ Ayer said. Chief Bailey reported he had explained this to city officials but did know what course of action they planned to take. Marlowe reported Monday he will sit down with Bailey and GBI agents at 2:30 p.m. Thursday to discuss the audit.
