Milner plans first Pecan Festival for May

By Kay S. Pedrotti The City of Milner is preparing for a ‘Pecan Festival’ in May. The name isn’t taken by anyone in the area, said city administrator Harold Wilson, and council member Tracey Alford has some unique ideas for drawing a crowd. The council approved Alford’s leadership at a called meeting on March 16, when the members also approved final adoption of an ordinance changing the property at 567 Highway 41 North from commercial to residential. The action was taken at the request of the property owners, a couple who are military veterans seeking a VA loan for a home. VA does not approve home loans on commercial property. The May 21 festival will include a car show, a fun run and a 5K run dubbed ‘Run Like a Nut.’ Vendors and sponsors are being lined up, Alford said, and several businesses in Milner have already contributed funds as sponsors. The vendors will include both food and crafts and possibly fresh produce, said Alford. A well-known Barbecue and Blues band will provide music during the event, she added. Proceeds from the festival will go to purchase adult exercise equipment for the city park, where the festival will be held. The park is bounded by Main Street, Zebulon Street, Pecan Street and Birch Street, and is near City Hall and St. George’s Episcopal School. Alford said runners can register online at raceentry.com/races Pecan Festival 2016. She said the site also has a provision for signing up as volunteers
