Monroe man found dead in burning car

A Monroe County man was found dead in his burning car on Boxankle Road Dec. 8. The official MCSO news release from public information officer Allison Selman-Willis follows: A Monroe County man was found dead in his car Wednesday night, Dec. 8, 2010 after calling E-911 to report he was trapped inside his car. Five Monroe County EMS squads as well as six deputies searched the area where the victim said he was located and found him approximately two miles from his home, on Boxankle Road. When EMS arrived the man’s 2005 Lexus was completely engulfed in flames. The victim, John W. Smith, 78 years old, was found in the car and pronounced dead on the scene by the Monroe County Coroner. The victim had some health issues and also suffered from dementia. Mr. Smith’s body was transported to the GBI Crime Lab in Atlanta. His body was identified using dental records and a serial number found on a knee replacement. Although no foul play is suspected, the investigation continues to determine the nature of the incident.
