An 18-month old Monroe County child died after being left for an extended period in a car in a school parking lot April 23.From MCSO public affairs:The toddler was pronounced dead on arrival at Monroe County Hospital. A preliminary investigation indicates the child was left inside of a parked vehicle at a local school. The investigation has revealed that the child, restrained in a child safety seat, was left inside the vehicle for an extended period of time. The child has been transported to the GBI Crime Lab in Decatur, GA for an autopsy. Names are being withheld at this time, pending a routine welfare check on another child in the household by The Department of Family and Children’s Services. This incident is still under investigation by the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office. The toddler was pronounced dead on arrival Friday, April 23, 2010, around 5:40 p.m. at the Monroe County Hospital. A preliminary investigation indicates the child was left inside of a parked vehicle at a local school. The mother of the child, India Chatmon, 23 years old, is an employee of Samuel E. Hubbard Elementary School in Forsyth, GA. The investigation has revealed that the child, restrained in a child safety seat, was left inside the vehicle from the time his mother arrived at work Friday morning, until she left work late that afternoon. As soon as Ms. Chatom discovered her son in the van, she immediately drove to the Monroe County Emergency Room with the child. As she was driving, she was calling 911 for help. The family resides in Douglas County, which is about an hour and one half from Forsyth. The child was transported to the GBI Crime Lab in Decatur, GA for an autopsy. This incident is still under investigation by the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.
