The Lamar County Middle School Trojans (11-4) defeated the Monroe County Bulldogs 37-33 last Thursday in a packed out gym in Forsyth to claim the Middle Georgia Middle School Athletic League basketball championship. It was the first ever boys basketball championship in the history of the school.
The Trojans were down 12-4 after the first period and coach Jeffrey Greene, a seventh grade science teacher, pulled his troops aside, telling them, “Do the things that got us here. Stop thinking. Go have some fun and we will win this game.”
The Trojans fought back and trailed 16-13 at the half. They tied it at 22-22 in the third period and came on strong in the final period to take the four point win.
Kolton Andrews led the Trojans with 12 points. Braydon Wilson, Patrick Calloway and Emmanuel Stewart finished with seven points each.
Malachi Morris had seven steals for LCMS. He averaged 4.4 steals per game for the season.
“These young men believed in our standard of unwavering pressure on defense. I am so proud of their daily sacrifice. They deserved to be able to bring this trophy back to our community,” coach Greene concluded.
