Murder suspect allegedly told investigators victim was alive and in Tennessee when she knew he was dead

A 36-year-old Knoxville woman was arrested in Griffin Oct. 8 in connection with the disappearance of Charles Raymond Tice, 85, who was last seen alive March 1. His body was found at a still undisclosed location on April 5 and has been at the GBI crime lab since.

Lamar deputies staked out an apartment on Timberwolf Trail in Griffin Wednesday morning after the GBI took out warrants and arrested Laquinda Shandrell Moreland when she emerged. She is charged with malice murder, concealing the death of another and making false statements.

The false statements warrant notes that Moreland told Lamar deputies March 5 that Tice was alive and in Tennessee with another individual.

Family members reported Moreland was Tice’s caregiver and that she and others had taken advantage of him, used drugs in his home in northeast Lamar and convinced him to sell off his possessions and give them the money. One of those individuals is still driving Tice’s late wife’s car, they said.

A family member was in the Tice home with deputies when he entered the victim’s bedroom and found two bloodstains and a large section of carpet that had been cut out and removed.

The GBI and LCSO have not disclosed how or where Tice’s body was found but family members said he was wrapped in the missing carpet when located.
