Murder trials postponed; jurors need not report

The murder trials of Shameik Spinks and Lekievius Eleby, scheduled to begin Monday, Jan. 23 in Lamar superior court and continue for two weeks have been postponed. The over 150 jurors called for the trials need not report, according to Clerk of Court Frank Abbott. The father of assistant district attorney Scott Johnston reportedly has a brain tumor and is facing life threatening surgery in the coming days, prompting the postponements. There is also the issue of last-minute discovery motions filed by the defense in at least one of the cases. Spinks and Eleby were to be tried for the murder of Danavan Bussey in December 2010. A codefendant, Bryce Aresenio Smith, earlier entered a guilty plea and agreed to testify against the alleged killers. Bussey was shot once in the leg with a .22 pistol and once in the face with a 12 gauge shotgun.
