Murder victim allegedly shot four times by own son

By Walter Geiger A 39-year-old Barnesville man is in jail charged with killing his own mother at their home at 157 Liz Acres Rd. here Sept. 15. David Lewis Mc-Guire Jr. is charged with felony murder in connection with the shooting death of his mother, 70-year-old Elaine Brown McGuire. A daughter, who had not heard from Mrs. McGuire, went to the residence to check on her just after 9 a.m. and found her dead and her brother highly intoxicated, according to sheriff Brad White. Lt. Chris Webster was first on the scene and David McGuire was arrested after he failed to cooperate. Initial reports were Mrs. McGuire had committed suicide. A GBI crime scene unit was called in to process the scene and the body was taken to the state crime lab for an autopsy which determined Mrs. Mc Guire had been shot multiple times. The GBI took a warrant on David McGuire, a convicted felon, for felony murder. More charges are likely. Coroner Jim Smith said there was one bullet hole in the door casing of a bathroom in the home. Elaine McGuire was found in a nearby bedroom. She suffered one gunshot wound to the cheek. That bullet shattered a cell phone she had up to her ear. She suffered three other wounds to her chest and side, the coroner said. Neither White nor Smith had a time of death but the sheriff reported two deputies who were checking nearby New Life Baptist Church heard some gunshots around 7:30 a.m. the day Mrs. McGuire’s body was found. After his arrest, David Mc-Guire was briefly hospitalized for chest pains and high blood pressure. He was later released. He was denied bond at a first appearance hearing before chief magistrate Karen Jackson. David McGuire has a lengthy arrest history at the LCSO dating back to 1998.
