Tax collections in Lamar County are down from last year as the deadline to pay before penalties are added to the bills.Lamar County property owners owed a total of $10,040,163.45 in taxes. So far, $8,325,972 has been collected. On March 2, a 10% late fee and penalties will go into effect for those who still have not paid.”We’re still lingering around 82%,” said tax commissioner Andrea Anthony.Second notices went out last week, said tax commission bookkeeper Charlotte O’Neal. “People should be receiving those soon.”Some 9,176 bills were sent out of a total of 10,323 posted parcels. Of that tax money, $95,756.97 goes to the state, $3,526,738.37 goes to the county and $6,417,280.31 goes to the school system. Another $387.80 in expected penalties is also on the books.
