Nearly $2 million in taxes overdue

Tax collections in Lamar County are down from last year as the deadline to pay before penalties are added to the bills. Lamar County property owners owed a total of $10,040,163.45 in taxes. So far, $8,325,972 has been collected. On March 2, a 10% late fee and penalties will go into effect for those who still have not paid. ”We’re still lingering around 82%,” said tax commissioner Andrea Anthony. Second notices went out last week, said tax commission bookkeeper Charlotte O’Neal. “People should be receiving those soon.” Some 9,176 bills were sent out of a total of 10,323 posted parcels. Of that tax money, $95,756.97 goes to the state, $3,526,738.37 goes to the county and $6,417,280.31 goes to the school system. Another $387.80 in expected penalties is also on the books.
