By Walter GeigerThe Lamar County commission approved rezoning of property at Van Mar Park near I-75 off Hwy. 36 East to make way for a new industry and a hotel. The move was made at the regular commission meeting Dec. 18.Roughly 25 acres across Regions South Drive from the current Peterbilt location is involved.Of that, 19.63 acres was rezoned to M-2 for Werner Trucking which will locate a truck-trailer maintenance facility there. The building will consist of four bays and 25,000 square feet, according to company representative Chris Owen. The project will mean 30 new jobs for the county, including office staff, dispatchers and skilled service technicians. Engineering on the project is underway and construction is expected to begin in early 2019.Werner anticipates the new facility will take some of the load off its current maintenance operation on the south side of Atlanta. The local operation will be fully fenced and secured with state of the art environmental failsafes, Owen said.Just over five acres at the end of the property nearest Hwy. 36 was zoned C-2 with plans to locate a hotel there. ’Werner partners hotel chains to serve its drivers. Werner will reserve most of the rooms. It will be a national hotel firm. The firm has not yet been chosen,’ Owen added. Both the commission and planning and zoning board voted unanimously in favor of rezoning the parcels.
