New pitch on old school is three-year lease

The Lamar County commission took up the question of the old Booker School campus and its programs for the underprivileged at its meeting Tuesday night. The new pitch is for the county to lease the facility. No decision was made. The lease would run for three years and allow the programs at the aging facility to carry on. Grants and other funds would be sought to partially refurbish the school which is in various states of disrepair. The Carrerra Program, run under the auspices of the Morris Brown School of Medicine, would pay the lease. At the end of the lease, the county could acquire the property for little or no out of pocket expense. Commissioner Bennie Horton said no taxpayer monies should be expended on the campus or the improvement of it. Commissioner Van Baker promised he would study the situation carefully before making a decision.
