Nooks’ investiture is Friday at GSC

Pomp and circumstance will be the order of the day when Dr. Kirk Nooks is invested as president of Gordon State College Friday. The ceremony begins at 10 a.m. in the student activities and recreation center on campus. Nooks was named GSC president by the Board of Regents last June. Over 90 students will take part in his investiture. An investiture is a formal ceremony of conferring the authority and symbols of high office and is held during the new president’s first year in office. It is an academic ceremony which has symbolized the pursuit of knowledge since the Middle Ages. Today, investitures are opportunities to welcome a new era and celebrate as a community. University system chancellor Steve Wrigley will give keynote remarks and present Nooks with the investiture medallion. Dr. Benny Tate of Rock Springs Church will give the invocation and Barnesville mayor Peter Banks and Griffin physician Dr. Tommy Hopkins, a member of the Board of Regents, will also present remarks. ’It is with the highest honor that I will be formally invested as the president of this historic institution. I am deeply moved that members of our 14-county primary service region, Gordon students, members of the campus community and friends and family from near and far will be present and a part of this event,’ Nooks said of his big day.
