One dead, six hurt in I-75 crash

One man was killed and six others were injured when an SUV crashed on I-75 in Monroe County near the Lamar line after a blowout. Additionally, Barnesville police are working an accident late Sunday afternoon at the ever dangerous intersection of highways 18 and 41 in Barnesville near Ingles. The full release on the Monroe crash from Allison Selman-Willis of the Monroe sheriff’s office follows: A man has been killed in a one car accident on I-75 in north Monroe County today. The vehicle, a 2000 Chevy Suburban, went off the roadway after the left rear tire failed. The vehicle rolled over several times ejecting one passenger and trapping three others. The person who was ejected was pronounced dead on the scene by the Monroe County Coroner. The other six passengers were transported to the Medical Center for medical treatment — at least one was MediVac’ed to the Medical Center and all others were taken by ambulance. Names of the victims are being withheld pending notification of next of kin. The accident occurred around 6 p.m. tonight, July 31, 2011 near mile marker 196 NB. Traffic was blocked for several miles while the Interstate was closed for about an hour so that law enforcement and EMS crews could clear the accident site. . Once notification of next of kin has been made the names of the individuals will be released. The incident is still under investigation.
