Lamar County will host the second annual United Bank of Barnesville Oscar Wimberly Holiday Classic tournament at the high school gymnasium. The tournament is named in honor of legendary coach Oscar Wimberly who joined the Lamar County school system from Booker High School when the local schools were integrated in 1970. Coach Wimberly was the first head football coach at Lamar County but stepped down after two seasons to head up the basketball program where he coached over 30 years. He continued to work in the system for several years after his retirement from coaching.Tournament play will tip-off Wednesday with the Upson-Lee Lady Knights playing the Mary Persons Lady Bulldogs at 4 p.m. Upson-Lee’s boys and MP’s boys will play at 5:30 p.m. At 7 p.m. the Lady Trojans will face the Griffin Lady Bears with the Lamar boys and Griffin boys following at 8:30 p.m. The girls consolation game will be Friday at 4 p.m. followed by the boys consolation game at 5:30 p.m. The girls championship game is Friday night at 7 p.m. followed by the boys championship at 8:30 p.m.
