Perdue: Stimulus $ to halt second property tax bills

Lamar County property owners may dodge a feared second ad valorem tax bill that has loomed on the horizon for months, according to Governor Sonny Perdue. Perdue announced Tuesday that federal ‘stimulus’ money provided enough breathing room in the state budget to reinstate Homeowner Tax Relief Grants statewide. Georgia is one of 10 states receiving over $1 billion as a result of the stimulus bill which Democrats term essential and Republicans refer to as a boondoggle rife with waste. Earlier this year, Lamar tax commissioner Andrea Anthony said the loss of the homeowner grants could require a second bill in the approximate amount of $200 for every property owner in Lamar. Now, it appears those bills have been forestalled but work remains if funding for the relief grants is to be provided in the years to come.
