Political forums featuring candidates in contested races on the July 20 primary ballots are set for Tuesday and Thursday, May 25 and 27, at the Barnesville Civic Center. There has been one change in the original schedule. School board at large candidates Ryran Traylor and Danny Turner will appear on Thursday rather than Tuesday so Turner can announce the Trojan spring football game. Both events begin at 6:30 p.m. and are sponsored by Lamar County Farm Bureau and the local chamber of commerce. The May 25 lineup includes incumbent district 1 county commissioner Bennie Horton Jr. vs. challenger Eric B. Shropshire and incumbent district 2 commissioner George Brown vs. challenger Charles Glass. The May 27 forum will also feature candidates in three contested state house races.Invited are district 126 incumbent David Knight vs. challenger Bill Mauldin; district 127 incumbent Billy Maddox vs. challenger Spencer Price; and district 125 GOP candidates Mary Alice Carter and Susan Holmes.Another series of forums is planned for late summer or early fall featuring primary winners and their cross-party opponents and those in any contested, nonpartisan races. Each candidate will get a five minute opening statement and a two minute closing statement. Candidates will get to ask two questions of their opponents and then the participants will answer three questions submitted by the public.Potential questions may be posted here or called in to the chamber office at 770-358-5884.
