Practice makes for perfect sauce

While practicing to make barbecue sauce for competition at the Barnesville Barbecue and Blues Festival to be held later this month, Mike Wheeless and Harold Callaway, also known as The Fat Boys, entered their sauce in competition at Smoke on the Water at Bickley’s Lake in Thomaston last weekend ‘“ and they accidently won. There were about 40 entries. The grand prize was a guitar autographed by Willie Nelson. ”For about a year we’ve been piddling with this making barbecue sauce and Brunswick stew,” said Wheeless, who is manager of Freshway Market. Ingredients include mustard and vinegar, as well as Old Whiskey River bourbon, inspired by Willie Nelson’s 1978 song of the same name. The bourbon was required to be one of the ingredients. ”The amounts and other ingredients are secret,” said Callaway, who describes his job at Moody Funeral Home as “the flower boy.” They carried their sauce in a mustard jar. The barbecue sauce duo plans to enter their winning recipe in the Barnesville festival Apr. 24-25. They will also enter their not-yet-famous Brunswick stew.
