The Herald-Gazette has learned the Department of Corrections will close the Lamar Pre-Release Center off the MLK bypass effective May 1. Budget constraints forced the closing. Employees will be relocated to other corrections facilities if they desire. Though budgets are tight locally, too, there is some sentiment Lamar County should acquire the facility and operate a prison work camp from it. More on this story as it develops.
