Prescription drug drop boxes installed here

As a prevention tool for the abuse of prescription drugs and over the counter medications (OTC), the Lamar County Sheriff’s Office and the Barnesville Police Department have installed permanent drop boxes for unused or expired prescription and OTC medications. The Lamar County Sheriff’s Office and the Barnesville Police Department want to give residents ample resources to safely and anonymously clear out medications with potential for abuse or a negative environmental impact. Increase in the abuse of prescription and OTC medications are the reason for the boxes. Years ago, the number of deaths related to drug overdoses and drug-related deaths were predominantly due to illegal drugs. Now that trend is completely reversed, and it’s predominantly prescription drugs and OTC medications, or combinations. The hope is that the boxes will reduce the exposure of prescription and OTC drugs for potential misuse. This is going to enable us to make the community a little bit safer and get some of these prescription and OTC drugs that have become so hazardous, particularly to our young people, off our streets. Prescription drug abuse, even in small amounts, and OTC medication in combinations with the wrong things can have a fatal outcome. A drug overdose doesn’t have to be that you simply take too much of something, you could take two things where the drugs interaction cause the death. There will be a drop box located at the Lamar County Sheriff’s Office inside the lobby area and will be accessible 7 days a week, 24hours a day. There will be a drop box located at the Barnesville Police Department inside the front lobby area and will be available Monday through Friday from 8am to 4:30pm. Question about the Prescription Drop Box Program can be directed to our Community Relations Director, Deputy Suzanne Cooper at the Lamar County Sheriff’s Office 770-358-5159, ext. 269 or cell# 706-975-5809. – Sheriff Brad White
