Promoting civility in political discussions

By Andy Harnack On Nov. 1 The Herald Gazette published a short essay in which I pieced together the body politic of a supposed ‘ideal’ presidential candidate. Responses I received by phone calls, cards in the mail, comments on Thomaston Street and emails from those who know me were delightfully varied. I wrote the piece as a gentle satirical prod in response to a rumor I’d heard on Main Street. The rumor went (and still goes, I hope): Some people in the Lamar County Tea Party want to come to a meeting of the Lamar County Democrats. In other words, Tea Partiers and Democrats might chat things over at a meeting in the Pastime Grill. To encourage the possibility of that convivial conversation, I wrote my little essay.
