Public hearing on millage rate is tonight

By Sherri Ellington Tonight, the Lamar County commission is expected to set its millage rate. A public hearing will be held at 6 p.m., before the regular meeting. The county is looking at a rollback millage rate of 10.512, up slightly from this year’s 10.8412 mills. The higher rate, however, will bring in less actual taxes. This year the county has estimated total tax income of $4,881,131 as opposed to $4,968,530 last year. The net tax decrease ‘“ which must be advertised as an increase under state law ‘“ is 1.76%, a loss of $87,399. The tax digest shows a total of $531,817,671 in real and personal property; $33,809,740 in motor vehicle values; $1,958,027 in mobile homes; and $763,536 in timber values for a gross digest of $568,348,974. After exemptions the digest is set at a net value of $464,338,992. Taxes are based on 40% of this net.
