Quarry decision expected by the end of the year

Vulcan Materials personnel continue to evaluate the quarry site off Hwy. 36 East, doing test drilling and engineering where exactly the entrance off the highway would be as they mull over the go/no go decision there. ’We expect a decision by the end of the year. If we get the green light, we can be operational by the end of the second quarter 2021,’ Vulcan’s Jimmy Fleming said Friday. Officials are also looking at whom will serve on the community advisory committee that is part of agreements with Florida Rock which Vulcan inherited when it bought the site. The committee is to consist of two Vulcan employees, two adjoining land owners (one each from Lamar and Spalding counties), one at-large quarry neighbor, one officer of the citizens group from the area and one member appointed by the county commissioner from district two. The company is also required to give the county 30,000 tons of rock in its first year of operation and then provide rock to the county for 20% of its DOT price for the life of the quarry. There are also stipulations on protecting the wells of landowners in the area and advising them of when blasting will occur.
