Reports surfaced last week that Vulcan Minerals would be opening its long-mothballed rock quarry off Hwy. 36 East but that decision is not yet set in stone.’It’s not a done deal. We are trying to do our due diligence to see if we are going to open it,’ company spokesman Jimmy Fleming said Friday.Florida Rock won approval for the quarry back in the mid-2000s but put plans for the quarry on hold when the economy and housing industry tanked and the demand for gravel decreased. Vulcan bought out Florida Rock in a multi-million dollar deal in 2008.The looming construction of truck lanes on I-75 and a booming housing market now make the quarry more feasible.Vulcan is required to put in acceleration/deceleration lanes at the entrance to the quarry near Chappell Mill Road. It also must form a citizen advisory committee and jump through other hoops. The quarry site consists of 588 acres on the west side off Hwy. 36 East. A meeting of the NE Lamar County Community Association will be held Nov. 9 at 7 p.m. to discuss the quarry.
