Races heating up; Christopher won’t seek reelection

As Friday’s noon deadline for qualifying for the upcoming primaries draws nigh, local and regional races are heating up. Additionally, incumbent at-large school board member Ryan Christopher reported Thursday he will not seek reelection. Christopher said he has future political plans. “Absolutely. I hope to serve the citizens of Lamar County again in the future,” Christopher said. Danny Turner and Ryran Traylor have qualified to run for the at-large seat. In other developments, district 1 county commissioner Bennie Horton Jr. has drawn opposition. Eric B. Shropshire qualified Thursday to oppose Horton. Additionally, David Gault of Haddock, Ga. has qualified as a Democrat to seek the Dist. 125 house seat being vacated by Rep. Jim Cole. Also in that race is former Monticello mayor Susan Holmes who is running as a Republican.
