Rain causes bus fire; more problems loom

Heavy rain was listed as cause of a fire that gutted a Lamar County school bus at the bus barn Wednesday morning. More rain and more problems are on the way. The bus suffered heavy damage. Bus barn employee John Tillery said it appeared rain got into an electrical junction on the bus, causing a short that, in turn, caused the fire. Barnesville-Lamar County remains under a flood watch through late evening Christmas Day. Forecasts call for two to four more inches of rain falling on already saturated ground. Ponding of water on roadways is already a problem and will get worse. Ditches and culverts, particulary on dirt roads, are already an issue and will likely get worse. Some rural roads may become impassable so stay alert while driving. A flood warning is a possibility. Winds will pick up to 15 mph overnight Wednesday with higher gusts expected. There is a small possibility of severe weather, including tornados. Be on the lookout for weather alerts. High winds combined with saturated soils likely will lead to downed trees. Expect to see them on roadways overnight. Drive slowly and be vigilant. If you see issues caused by weather, e-mail news@barnesville.com.
