Ranew’s ditches local expansion; will take $13.2 million project to Upson

A proposed expansion at Ranew’s Fleet Services in Milner, which drew light opposition at a county commission meeting in March, is now off the drawing board and the company will now locate in Upson County near the Thomaston airport. The Upson County commission approved rezoning 44 acres at the corner of Hwy. 36 and Delray Road for the $13.2 million project April 23. Rezoning had previously been fast-tracked for that site. Ranew’s will do industrial coating of equipment parts of John Deere with an eye out for similar work for other firms in the future. The local opposition arose due lighting issues, a purported additional Wadsworth cemetery there and a wealth of Indian artifacts in the area. The Lamar commission okayed rezoning for Ranew’s despite the objections. Problems later arose over service delivery, particularly treatment of wastewater from the operation, that led the company to look elsewhere.
