John Gilbert was terminated from his position as recreation director at a 10 a.m. meeting today. County administrator Wayne Patterson said Gilbert was terminated for ‘conduct unbecoming a county official’. Gilbert, known as Papa John to a generation of young athletes, said earlier this week he knew the ax was about to fall. County commission chairman Jay Matthews confirmed the firing. He said it was time for a new direction at the department. Henry Murphy and other current department employees will run day-to-day operations on an interim basis until Gilbert is replaced. ”We already have some interest in this position from well-qualified candidates. We will advertise the post and start interviewing people as soon as possible,” Matthews said.
