They got the ball first after intermission but their first drive stalled. On their second possession, they drove downfield but stalled at the 17. The field goal unit went in but Lamar head coach Franklin Stephens called the fake and holder Lance Austin rose up and hit Ray Lyons with a 17-yd. strike to pull the Trojans to within one at 7-6. Scandrett hit the PAT to tie the game. The two teams battled back and forth but the big Cadets, particularly those on defense, tired as the game wore on. Lamar got the ball back on their six yard line with 7:23 left in the game and began the winning drive. They converted five third downs and one critical fourth down. Starting QB Lance Austin came up short on a third down run but lost his helmet and had to leave the game. With the game on the line and Lamar facing fourth and one, backup quarterback L.J. (Ballboy) Smith came in and got four critical yards on a keeper to move the chains. That key play set up Scandrett’s game-winning field goal and bedlam ensued as the Trojans moved on to the title game for the first time in school history. ”I knew I had it when it left my foot. I pushed it right but the wind was blowing that way. I knew I had to get it to make up for the one I missed earlier in the game,” Scandrett said. According to our stat man Greg Parrott, BC had a total of 194 yards but got only 39 in the second half. Lance Austin led Lamar with 124 yards on 22 carries. Lamar finished with 285 total yards. These numbers are unofficial but close. A total of 3121 tickets were sold for the game. About 200 others were inside the stadium which seats 2500.
