By Kay S. PedrottiThe Lamar County School System is ‘aggressively searching’ for a new Lamar County high school principal for 2016-17, according to Dr. Jute Wilson, superintendent.’Once this position is filled, we will immediately begin consideration for the head football coach. We have already received quality applicants for both the principal and coaching positions,’ he said.Head coach Jamie Abrams has resigned effective at the end of the school year, as have high school principal Matt Adams and primary school principal Becky Brown. Kenneth Roberts Jr. has been named the new primary school principal; Calvin Scandrett is the primary assistant principal. In education, resignations are generally effective at the end of the contract, which is June 30 for 12-month employees, according to Wilson.’Personnel issues are confidential. The school board and superintendent are not at liberty to discuss these matters publicly,’ Wilson said. ‘Our standard procedure is to approve all coaching assignments for the following year during our May or June meeting. We have coaching vacancies and changes at the middle and high schools every year. These roles are a very important part of our school system. We work hard to provide the best leadership, instruction and supervision for all programs. Next year will be no exception.’ He said coaches may resign their coaching responsibility while maintaining their teaching position. There are many teachers who coach for middle or high school teams while teaching in other buildings, all the way down to pre-K, he added.’In a system our size, we have to use all resources and be creative at all times to fill all coaching positions. Thankfully, Lamar County is full of quality educators who work well together for the sake of the children. The new high school principal’s first objective will be to secure a head football coach,’ said Wilson.
